Hybrids - are they the answer to our gasoline woes?

The recent popularity of the Toyota Prius Hybrid is slowly turning heads and many are now looking to the Hybrids as the answer to some of the gasoline woes that are currently troubling American drivers.

The Hybrid-Electric Vehicles also known as HEVs basically combine the benefits a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The vehicles are being touted for their ability to support improved fuel economy when compared to current gasoline powered automobiles. In fact, the Prius is currently ranked #1 as the vehicle with the highest average mpg.

The HEV’s are popular because of many technological advances that have not yet shown up in gasoline powered vehicles such as regenerative braking which can actually convert and store energy for later use, electric motor drive/assist and an automatic start and shut off which will actually turn off the engine automatically when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts it when the driver presses down on the accelerator.

Given the fact that gas is used needlessly while the vehicle is idling, this feature is definitely a fuel saver.

Whether or not the Hybrid will actually become the car of the future remains to be seen, however, it seems to be well on it’s way.
