Increase your gas mileage with cruise control.

It is a fairly well known fact that reducing the amount of stopping and starting when driving your vehicle will increase gas mileage.

Most of us also readily accept the concept that using cruise control when driving on the highway will increase gas mileage as well.

I was however, a little shocked when I read a recent report that actually suggested that use of the cruise control feature could actually increase gas mileage by up to 14%! While 7 percent was the average increase among the four separate cars used in the test, even that number should be considered significant.

In the aforementioned test, four separate cars were driven at rates of speed varying between 65 mph and 75 mph on a 55 mile loop. When the cruise control feature was engaged at 70 mph significant increases in gas mileage were measured. The two was conducted twice with the same results.

Use of the cruise control feature is not recommended when driving in mountainous areas, however, as the engine will struggle to maintain a constant speed which will actually result in a decrease in the gas mileage.

Consequently, based on the results of this test, I would strongly recommend that drivers interesting in increasing the gas mileage of their vehicles use their cruise control whenever possible.
